  1. Hi and thank you for your great maps.
The current New Zealand (5 Sept) map will not open in Oruxmaps for me and errors with some comment about invalid magic byte number.
Previous map version have been OK.

    Neville – NZ

    1. Hi Neville, thanks for letting me know about the error. I have regenerated the New Zealand map and it should work fine now.

      Thanks
      Ian

  2. I just downloaded Sweden and tried to load it into Locus. Not supported file format, I was told. 🙁

    1. Hi there, I just tested the Sweden map and it seems to work, did you extract the .map file from the zip?

  3. Great site. It must be a lot of work to maintain! Thanks for the maps (2). The latest GB map is a great improvement over the 2015 version I had.
    (Just donated £5)

  4. I tried loading the Great Britain file on the same device and initially it said Invalid File Size. However, after about 15 minutes it stopped saying that and the map had loaded successfully

  5. I copied England to the OruxMaps map file location and it says: Problems with some maps: invalid magic byte when it tries to load it. It is OruxMaps 6.5.10 and Android 8.0.0 if this sheds any light. Thanks.

    1. Sorry, for some reason I’m not getting notifications of new comments… Is the England file working now?

    1. Hi Rob

I’ve just checked the source files and the Great Britain map covers the Channel Islands. What I can do for the next map generation run is try and produce a specific map of the Channel Islands – I did the same with Madeira a while back as you had to download the whole of Portugal to get it.

  6. Hi, I tried to download the map of Australia. I have problems to open it on cgeo. Further I tried Bavaria. Same problem. Both were updated on July, 27th.

Today I tried again with the same result. But as I downloaded Berlin -updated on July, 28th- it worked fine.

As I plan a trip to Australia, may I kindly ask you to check that file please? Thanks in advance.

  7. Hello and thank you for your amazing work!
Is there a reason why Mexico is not part of the list of maps (neither in Central America nor elsewhere I think…). Maybe it could be interesting to split it into its different regions, the same way as it is done for Canada or the USA.
Thanks again for your precious work
    Christophe

  8. Hello
Iam living in the triangel of the countrys Netherland – Germany and Belgium.
For offline geocache Iam using G:Ceo and offline maps us must have from Netherland-Grmany and BElgium.
Buit I can only download tis diferent maps from the countrys and in offline modus I aonly can use one map in the same time. So I must switch between the diferent country maps.
Is it possible to create a map with this three countrys ino ONE map ?? so i dont need to switc between the maps.\

    Thans,
    Jack

    1. Hi Jack

Sorry for the slow reply, I have been away. Unfortunately a single map of those countries would be too big for me to create.

I used to use Locus and I think that allowed you to load more than one offline map if that helps?

      Ian

  9. Ian,

thank you for offering a ready2use map for Sénegal!

This helps me exploring Dakar and playing Geocaching offline.

    Greets,
    Schremser

  10. Hi,
Apologize for being a newbie, but I can download zip files with the maps, extract the .map files, but cannot figure out how to get Orux to open the .map files

Thanks for any help. Appreciated if you can also email any response to tomtjd@yahoo.com

  11. It seems like Canada – British Columbia is corrupt, fyi. Locus/Orux is giving a unknown error / magic byte error.

    1. Thanks for letting me know, I’m away at the moment but I’ll investigate as soon as I can

  12. Egypt’s file is definitely corrupted and/or incomplete. would you check again please?

    1. Will do, thanks for letting me know. It’ll be a few days before it gets generated again, sorry about that!

    1. Hi there

There seems to have been a problem generating the map – I’m running the script again now so hopefully it will be there in the next day or so.

      Sorry about that
      Ian

    1. Hello there
I’ve created a map for Ghana now, you can find it in the Africa section. I can’t accept payment for the map (that would breach the data licence) but you are welcome to make a donation to the running cost of my sure if you want ☺
      Ian

  13. Hi
    Thanks for maintaining these.
Tried downloading Great Britain today. Noticed it was much older than the England/Wales etc, and C:geo doesn’t recognise it.
We’re heading for a few days in the Welsh borders and it would be nice not to have to keep swapping maps!

    1. Hello, sorry for the slow reply, my internet at home has been down for a week and a half. The Great Britain map is one of the ones that is too big for me to create on my server so I have to mirror the version from Mapsforge. I can see there is a version from April available so I’m running the script to update them now, you should be able to download it very shortly. Sorry if it’s too late!

  14. My name is John and I’m from Brazil.
I have a custom OSM map of my city, but I can’t convert it on
Vector map to use on Locus.
I have tried osmosis and plugin, but I had no success.
    Could you help me please!
    Tks in advance.

  15. Canada – quebec.map file look like to be corrupted. Oruxmaps give an error and said something like ‘… magic byte …’

  16. Hi Ian,
    Great, these vectormaps!
In the Netherlands map, something went wrong: normal residential houses are not shown in Orux – even on level 21 only their numbers (and their outbuildings!) appear; e.g. N 52.9126, E 5.05178.

    1. Hi Michael
I generate my maps using the Openstreetmap extracts produced daily at download.geofabrik.de – unfortunately they do not produce a file for Myanmar which is why I can’t generate a map. Sorry about that, you’ll have to rely on Google Maps 🙂

    2. Hi Ian,
there is mix of different maps that are outdated, scattered around the globe.
      Why is that pls ?

  17. Hi,
in France and Germany, there are provinces/states missing.
    Any reason for that ?
    TXs and cheers
    Michael

    1. Hi Michael

I haven’t deliberately missed states, I’ll look into it. Thanks for the heads up 🙂

      Ian

    1. Hi, unfortunately I suffered a server crash and lost several months of map updates. I hope to spend some time this weekend starting to update the maps again, including this one.

      Thanks
      Ian

    1. Hi and sorry for the slow reply. You’re more than welcome to mirror my files if you so wish 🙂
      Ian

  18. Excellent work Ian for hosting the maps 🙂 Could you also share the commands/scripts that you use to generate the vector maps from the OSM data ?

I would also appreciate if you could tell me if there is any difference in the vector map data generated here vs the one on the mapsforge download site ? I see yours has slightly different regions compared to the ones from mapsforge, are there any others ?

    1. Hi Ash
Thanks for your support 🙂 You can download one of the bash scripts I use here – I use separate scripts for different regions and just start them manually as required.
I don’t know what settings they use to generate the maps for the mapsforge download site – if they apply different options to the mapsforge writer then the result could be slightly different. I use the map data from geofabrik and, in most cases, the regions they use are the regions I end up with 🙂 A few larger regions won’t generate on my server so I’ve used bounding boxes to generate maps of small areas. The best example is Russia, where I generate maps of certain cities requested through this comments thread.

Hope this is of some help 🙂

  19. Hi Ian,

Thanks for trying out the US maps! I assumed it wouldn’t work as they are so large. I don’t suppose you know how to load multiple files using the Mapsforge API in Android. I am currently using “tileRendererLayer.setMapFile”, whereby only one map file can be used. Any way to load multiple map files?

    Kind regards

    Jack

    1. Hi Jack
I’m afraid I can’t help, I use Locus Maps on my Android phone, that allows you to load many vector maps simultaneously.

      Thanks
      Ian

    1. Hi Roman
I’ve replaced the Saratov and Udmurtia maps with new ones generated from the .pbf files you linked to, are they ok?
      Thanks
      Ian

    1. Hi Roman

The maps you asked for should now be available – please let me know if I didn’t get the areas right 🙂

      Ian

  20. Hi Ian,

Fantastic website. I was just wondering (probably naively) if it is possible to generate a single map file for the whole of the USA? I realise this is would be a huge file and the mapsforge writer plugin may not be able to handle it. Geofabrik does have a single map of the USA.

If this is not possible, would it be possible to generate the .map files for the USA North, USA South, USA Midwest, USA West and USA Pacific. These files are also on Geofabrik.

    Kind regards

    Jack

    1. Hi Jack

I suspect, with the possible exception of the Northeast region, my server will not have enough memory to be able to generate these maps unfortunately. I’m having a go at generating all the regions though – I’ll post another reply once it’s tried them all 🙂

      Thanks for your interest
      Ian

    2. Hi again Jack

As you probably realised, my server failed to generate any of the USA region maps successfully, they were all too big unfortunately.

      Sorry about that
      Ian

    1. Hi Charles
Thanks for pointing this out. The Great Britain map is at the top end of the size I can successfully generate on my server and it does fail sometimes. I’m going to manually regenerate the map now which will take several hours if successful. If not, I will use the version from mapsforge.org instead. Because mapsforge.org may use different parameters when generating their maps, it is possible that file sizes may not always be as you expect.
Please let me know if you have any further problems.
      Thanks
      Ian

  21. Hi Ian,
you’ve got duplicates like Canary Islands and Ireland and alike.
    Cheers
    Michael

    1. Hi Felipe

Madeira is part of the Portugal map. Is this sufficient or do you need a separate map for the islands?

      Thanks
      Ian

    2. Ian, thank you anyway… but as Azores has a separated file, I was asking one only with Madeira Island… (it would have 1 MB instead of 47MB that Portugal Map has)

      Thank you

  22. Hi, mapsforge’s demo applications crashes reproducible after loading these files (tested on two phones and with multiple maps). Maybe a mapsforge 2.4 vs 3+ format problem or am I missing something else? Cheers

    1. – The app must be able to read map file version 3.
For that it needs mapsforge version 0.3.X or the new 0.4.0

      – Also most of the maps don’t have defined ‘start position’ and/or ‘start zoom level’.
If the app does not take care of it, it can eventually lead to app crash.

  23. Hi Ian,
Russia I miss completely. Maybe you need to split into Siberia and the western part.
    What do you think ?
    TXs and kind regards
    Michael

    1. Hi Michael

I’ve removed the damaged files. Every time I try to generate these files it seems to fail. I may have to do what I did with Ontario and only generate a map for part of each province/state so I at least have some of the area covered!

      Thanks for letting me know
      Ian

    2. I’ve replaced the damaged Nunavut and NW Territories maps with those from the newly relaunched downloads.mapsforge.org site. They don’t have a map for Alaska either so I’m guessing they hit the same problem as me. Is there a particular area you’d like a map for?

      Ian

    3. Hi Michael

I have successfully generated a map for south east Alaska, including Anchorage. Does this meet your needs?

      Ian

    4. Hi Michael

Geofabrik splits Russia into European and Asian parts. The Asian part was in my queue but hasn’t appeared so it must have failed. I will try it again soon. I’m trying to generate the European map now…

      Thanks
      Ian

    5. Hi Ian,
TXs for the Russian part. I downloaded twice and tried. Both times Locus tells the map in corrupt.
      Can you pl.s advise ?
      TXs and kind regards
      Michael

    6. Hi Michael

Sorry for the slow reply. I haven’t been able to successfully generate maps for all of Russia, but I have managed to generate maps of the Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Volgograd areas. I hope these are some use to you!

      Ian

    1. Thanks emux 🙂

downloads.mapsforge.org seems to be back in operation but doesn’t have worldwide coverage. Hopefully my maps will complement and add to those they have available.

      Ian

  24. Hey

I’ve seen that you started this Page at the ftpmapsforge site, while looking for newer maps.
Nice!! But I have a question. Is it possible to merge (combine?) all the maps from one country in one “big” map file? For my example, it would be annoying to change the selected map in c:geo every time I change my place to be in germany

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi there
Geofabrik provide a file from which I could build a single map for all of Germany. Unfortunately my server is not powerful enough to process it. Is there a particular group of states you would like as a single map? If so I will try to generate it but I can’t make any promises 🙂

      Ian

    2. Hi Diddi

An update for you – the newly relaunched downloads.mapsforge.org has a single map for Germany – I’ve copied that to my site too. Hope that helps!

      Ian

  25. Hi there, great work! This is what we were waiting for. We use these offline maps in the c:geo app for geocaching.

Could you please add the Netherlands as well?

    Cheers,
    Jan

    1. Hi there – I already have these! 🙂
Portugal and the Azores are under Europe – Other
Madeira is included in the Portugal file.

      Hope this helps 🙂
      Ian

  26. Great that someone continues the (dead) mapsforge. I have a server with some free resources and would like to help with creating and hosting the maps. Please contact me, if you are interested.

    1. Hi there

Ontario was actually the first Canadian province I generated, but when I tested it on Locus it was corrupted in some way. Unfortunately I’m at the mercy of the Geofabrik data and the mapsforge plugin…

I’ve moved it up the queue so in a day or so it should be on the site – I hope it works this time!

      Ian

    2. Hi again Star

I have managed to generate a map for southern Ontario – for some reason the generation hangs whenever I try to do the whole province. If the area covered doesn’t meet your needs please let me know and I’ll do a different area 🙂

      Ian

    3. Thanks Ian- that is perfect and covers everywhere I might drive in the foreseeable future!

    4. Hi Star

I now have a map for all of Ontario, copied from downloads.mapsforge.org

      Hope that helps you 🙂
